Avoid Loud Noises

The easiest way to avoid doing damage to your hearing with loud noises is to stay away from the loud noises that could cause damage in the first place. If you’re in a situation where you have to raise your voice in order to talk to the people that you’re with, can’t hear what people near you are saying you may have damage.

You may also notice that noise hurts your ears, or you experience a ringing in your ears after you leave an area, then the noise you are around is loud enough to cause damage to your hearing. Noise levels of over 85 decibels can be harmful to your hearing.

Loud worksites, festivals, gigs, and nightclubs are all classic culprits, so take measures to protect your hearing when these places can’t be avoided.

Be Careful When Listening To Music

Listening to loud music using headphones or earphones is one of the most common causes of damage to your hearing. To avoid damaging your hearing like this, use noise-cancelling headphones, so you don’t have to turn up the volume of the music to drown out other noise from around you.

When you’re listening to music, keep the volume to a level where you can hear it comfortably, but don’t go any higher than this. You should never turn your music up higher than 60% of the maximum volume.

Try to avoid using earphones for more than an hour at a time. If you’re listening to music on earphones for a long time, such as at work or on long journeys, take a five-minute break every hour to give your ears a rest.

Protect Your Hearing At Loud Events And During Loud Activities

You need to take steps to protect your hearing at loud events like live gigs, sports events, or nightclubs. While you’re there, make sure you move away from the source of the noise, like the speakers. It’s also a good idea to take a break from the noise every fifteen minutes.

Your hearing will need around eighteen hours to recover after you have been exposed to loud noises, so you will need to give your hearing some time to recover before you are around more loud noises.

If you’re going to be somewhere loud, you should wear earplugs to protect your hearing. You can use the musicians’ earplugs which will reduce the volume and protect your hearing, without muffling the music and spoiling your experience. Learn more about protecting your hearing here.

Take Precautions At Work

If your job means you have to be exposed to loud noises, you should have a conversation with your HR department. Your employer is responsible for making changes to the workplace in order to reduce how often you are exposed to potentially dangerous loud noises.

For example, they should switch you to a quieter environment if it is at all possible to do so, make sure that you aren’t exposed to loud noise for long periods of time, and provide you with protection for your hearing, such as earmuffs or earplugs. If you are provided with ear protection at work, make sure you use it., especially if you’re operating loud machinery.

Get Your Hearing Tested

If you’re worried about your hearing and are worried that you might be losing some of it, you need to get a hearing test as soon as possible. The earlier you can get a hearing loss problem detected, then the earlier something can be done to help it.

If you know you are at a higher risk of hearing loss caused by loud noise, for example, if you’re a musician or often work in noisy construction sites, then it could be a good idea for you to have a regular hearing check. Once a year is probably a good idea to catch any problems early. By having your hearing tested, you can catch any developing issues before they get any worse and cause you more major problems.

It’s important to take care of your hearing as best you can. Never wait to have a hearing problem checked, so you can get help with any issues before they become worse.
