5 Ways to Make Working Out Too Fun to Skip

I tried a few years ago to get out and start working out. I had everything ready. New gym clothing, a nice trendy water bottle and some comfortably worn in shoes. I also had a new workout buddy and since she had the gym membership already I figured I was golden.

Day one started with me texting this workout buddy and not getting a responce. I was all ready to go and I had nothing. Three hours later I recived a text back. “Sorry I forgot to set my alarm.”

The next day we lost power overnight and my phone was not charged. This time it was me making the excuse. “Sorry I slept in.” The next day my workout buddy didn’t text me back. This went on a couple of days and I finally gave up.

I let the disappointment of not having a reliable workout buddy get to me. I could have gone out and walked around our apartment building. At that time of year I would have had to stay inside, but the building was three stories with a long hallway on each one. I could have done it, but I didn’t. I have over the years since realized I should have done something about it myself, but I had a bad view of working out.

Working out is not fun.

Working out can really feel like a chore, no one wants to go work out. If you are like me the idea of having to get up and go to the gym is annoying. I have to much to do in a day and it’s never fun going to the gym.

The worst part about starting a workout is being told we need to schedule it into our day. That, they say is how you will stick to it and accomplish your workout goals. However, when we look at a workout as something we have to put into our schedule it makes us dread it. We don’t want to be told what to do, even by ourselves.

Though we do want to workout at our top performance, we need to work out in a way that will keep us working out. After all, most people who want to start working out are trying to lose weight. Making it less of a chore is essential to keep going. Having a fun weight loss routine and watching what you eat is the best way to really get out there and get healthy.

What if you could make working out fun? What if you could do a workout without feeling like you are working out? The following are a few ways you can get your workout in without feeling like your actually doing a workout.

Upbeat music and make a huge difference

I’m sure you have heard this tip before, but why does it work? According to the center for health research (Read: Can listening to Music Improve your workout?), When a song has a strong, steady beat, and you are able to pedal or run to the beat of that music it may encourage you to exercise more as it makes you feel more satisfied and inspired during your workout.

Finding the right workout music is key to making your workout a success. Unless you trying to do a relaxing yoga workout you need music that will keep you upbeat and moving the whole time you are doing your workout.

Here are my favorite workout songs

  • Lose Yourself (Eminem)
  • Enter Sandman (Metallica)
  • You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC)
  • Lose Yourself ( Eminem )
  • Yeah (Usher)
  • Shut Up and Dance (Walk the Moon)
  • Despacito (Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee)
  • Timber (Ke$ha)
  • Havana (Camila Cabello)
  • Sweet bu Psycho (Ava Max)

Yoga Songs

  • Hallelujah (Pentatonix)
  • Free Fallin (Tom Petty)
  • Dirt Road Anthem (Jason Aldean)
  • Sittin’ on The Dock of the Bay ( Otis Redding )
  • Give Me Love (
    Ed Sheeran )
  • Perfect (Ed Sheeran)
  • Let it go (Chaos and the Calm)
  • H.O.L.Y (Florida Georgia Line)

Workout with a Partner

Having a workout buddy is a great way to stay motivated and keep yourself working out. If you’re like me though and live in an area where you are new and have no friends this can be hard. The good news is we live in a world with the internet and that means you can make new friends and find a workout buddy easily.

The best part of having a workout buddy is that they will help motivate you to get out and do your workout. When your looking for a workout friend, make sure you choose someone who is really looking at the same goals you are. If you have to talk your friend into working out with you, then you probably won’t have the results you want.

Another great way to get a workout buddy is to get a fitness tracker like Fitbit that allows you to challenge friends in the app and can create great friendly competition for all of your friends and even theirs. I love my Fitbit Versa and use it often to challenge friends and co-workers. Amazon has some great fitness trackers including Fitbit, you can find them here.

If your lucky you have friends who are already working out on their own. Talk to them to see if they would like to workout with you or at least find a way to help keep you accountable.

Apps to help you find a workout buddy

Do something new

Join a sports team or a dance class

Have you ever participated in a sports team? If you were someone who didn’t participate in team sports while in school, then you may want to reach out and try a team sport. Not only will you get a great workout in, but you can make some new friends as well.

Even if you have participated in team sports before, try something you haven’t. If you played football in school try soccer. If your a basketball player, switch over to baseball or softball. Not only will this help with a workout, but learning a new skill can make you feel more confident in yourself.

If your not into team sports, you can always check out a local dance class. Ballroom dance is a great way to meet other people and learn something new and fun. If your single, check out a local singles dance class and maybe you will get much more then a workout.

Try an at home dance class, you can check out my review of Hip Shake Fitness for a fun way to get your workout in right from the comfort of your own home.

Go on an Adventure

Get out of your city and go on a hike. You don’t have to live near the mountains to get a great hike in. Most US states have state parks that have amazing hiking trails and walking paths that can get you outside and moving. Bring a couple of friends along and turn it into a girls or guys day out. Take pictures and show off your new workout.

Another great way to to get outdoors is rock climbing. Grab your family or few friends and see who can safely make it to the top first. Rock climing is a great total body workout. If you don’t know how to climb, take a class at a local rock climbing gym.

Not into the great outdoors. Go check out a new city. Head to a town you have never been to and walk around. By just walking you can really improve your health and I think so many people forget that. If you can get 10,000 steps or more a day you are doing a great job.

Workout with a goal that doesn’t involve you

Train for a marathon with a cause.

When you make your workout more about others and not about you, motivation is moved from doing something for yourself, to doing something for someone else. Having an outside motivation can really change how you look at working out. I know when I do something for someone else I am more motivated to go do it. When it’s just about me, not so much.

Here are a few great Marathons you can check out.

Go out dancing with your friends

This is the easiest way to get a great workout. Just go to a dance club with your friends and do an alcohol free night. Make sure to drink plenty of water so you don’t get dehydrated. I have done this a couple of times and I usually get about an hour to two hour workout in. Just by dancing and being social!

Getting out and doing something is the best way to start being more active. Making it fun and exciting will help you keep up your workout and venture into doing more. If you’re extremely overweight, check with your doctor before starting any workout.

  1. These are such great tips! I’ve been wanting to try working out, but I always hated running in gym class as a kid. The idea of going out dancing with friends sounds super fun and doable, especially as a college student! Thanks for the post!

  2. When I was in college that is one way I kept my weight down. I loved going out and dancing and it eventually led me to get out and do more with a workout.
