Do you avidly watch the news coming from your industry, hoping to gain an understanding of where the culture, technology and legal standards are headed? Do you take a personal interest in how business deals are made and the various negotiations that must be had before million-dollar contracts are signed?

Do you wish you could play a key role in improving a business from the inside? Chances are, you wish you could run a business without owning a business. Many professionals want to work in the upper echelons of business but that doesn’t mean they themselves, would like to start a business.

These types of professionals work in the legal, risk and financial departments usually. However, departments are flanked by another department that hangs in the background a bit more. The administrative department improves business from the inside. There are many opportunities to get into all four.

Professionals with binoculars

The risk department is kind of seen as the black magic zone of business. Many people have no idea what ‘risk management’ actually is or how important it is to a company. It’s in fact, vitally important. It just so happens that it’s vitally important in so many ways that getting into risk management as a career, is a lot easier than you might think.

There really isn’t a stringent background that one requires to work at risk. Unlike legal and financial, risk departments usually take on people that have a knack for judgment. Risk departments are tasked with averting disastrous investments, adapting the business to a changing world, identifying patterns and essentially, looking ahead with binoculars to predict adverse conditions in the market.

How could you, get into this field? Many professionals in credit risk, come from a background involving philosophy, history and mathematics degrees. Taking a philosophy or economic history degree would be greatly to your benefit. It’s incredibly important to fight for your case when it comes to working in a risk department. You will be working directly with the CEO at times. During certain situations and circumstances, such as economic crises, your decisions will allow the company to survive or they could potentially collapse everything.

Achieving a streamlined structure

Every leader wants their business to have a little fat as possible. Fat is waste, it’s extra, it’s unneeded and in fact, impedes the speed and efficiency of the business. It prevents the business from moving quickly when time is of the essence. Software that is outdated or perhaps doesn’t have the functions that the workers require, is going to lead to this kind of thing. Thus, working in the administration department is a highly prized goal for those that would like to run a business to an extremely high level. You will need a degree to get your foot in the door.

In this article, you can see what the career benefits will be if you were to take an MBA course. Working in the heart of the business, you’ll constantly be assessing the technology, procedures, processes, and standards of the company. There are many great roles to be in if you want to pull the levers that increase the productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness of a business.

Hands on the purse strings

If the number one area of business you’re most fascinated by is finance, there’s only one place for you. Working in the financial department is quite a prestigious role to have in any company, big or small. You are, just like a risk analyst, a gatekeeper. Only your mission is, to keep a firm hand on the purse strings. CEOs like to spend, they want to invest in their business to compete with rivals. However, financial advisors, accountants, planners and auditors, keep them and their actions in check.

You can start on the path to working in a financial department by taking a financial course such as accounting. Accounting is one of the bread and butter paths that many professionals first walked on before they became senior members of their industry. If you would like to be an advisor to the CEO or C-suite in general, going through various professional financial planner courses is your best bet. This would allow you to be a crucial part of running a business, without full responsibility landing on your head. Again, you’ll work closely with the CEO and senior members of the boardroom.

Some people have a dream job of designing products. Others want to become marketing giants. Others, however, would like to play key roles in the running of businesses. All three of these paths will lead you to the place where the levers of power are pulled.
