Keep Smiling: Top Tips To Improve Your Family’s Oral Health

There are various reasons why maintaining good dental health is essential. Firstly, it’s part of following a healthy lifestyle, as poor dental health ‘has been linked to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other health conditions. However, your oral hygiene can also impact your overall happiness and confidence, especially if you fall out of love with your smile.

As a result, it’s clear that you must make an effort to take care of your dental health. Here are some top tips you can use to get started!

Don’t skip a dentist visit.

Problems with our teeth are one the most commonly ignored health issues, despite the fact that they can lead to a range of complications if left unattended. As a result, you must visit the dentist at least once a year – with more frequent visits scheduled when necessary.

For example, your dentist may recommend you visit the hygienist for a deep cleaning every few months. If you have young children, you might want to send them to a Pediatric Dentist for more focused and specialized treatment and support.

Brush twice daily.

While this may seem obvious (it’s a lesson we’ve been taught since we were children), a recent study found that ‘30% of Americans do not brush their teeth twice a day – meaning it’s important to include that tip here. Brushing twice a day is the easiest way to maintain good oral hygiene, as it helps remove plaque and bacteria from your teeth.

You should ask your dentist for recommendations on which toothpaste you need to use, as they may have specific recommendations for you based on your current oral hygiene. For example, if you’re dealing with gum disease, they may have a specific product that may help.

Don’t forget to floss.

Introducing floss to your dental routine is another great way to brighten your smile. This is because it often catches the tiny bits of food or plaque that brushing alone misses. If you find flossing a little too fiddly, you might benefit from using interdental brushes. You should also use a dentist-recommended mouthwash.

Try to cut down on your sugar intake.

Your diet also plays a role in maintaining dental health, with sugar often being a key culprit when it comes to cavities or tooth loss. As a result, you should try to reduce your sugar intake where possible. For example, you could buy sugar-free alternatives to your favorite sodas. You should also try to increase your intake of teeth-friendly foods, such as dairy products. Milk, in particular, is great for your teeth as it can help to strengthen your enamel.

Switch to an electric toothbrush.

Manual toothbrushes are less effective than electric toothbrushes when it comes to removing plaque and bacteria from your mouth. They’re also known to decrease cases of gingivitis (gum disease). If you buy electric toothbrushes for children, they sometimes come with an automatic timer which is a great way to ensure they’re brushing for the recommended two minutes each time instead of rushing the task.
