What To Watch Out For When You Start Work At A New Business

If you are going to be starting work for a new company, then there are certain things that you need to be watching out for. You don’t want to work in an environment that is bad for you or those around you, so you have got to be keeping your eye on the things that might not be obvious at first. The reason for this is that if you do ever want to leave and yet you signed a contract for a certain length of time, this knowledge might help you. In this article, we are going to be taking a look at some of these things, so keep reading down below if you would like to find out more.

Setting: Office building. Women in a suit jacket and jeans sitting on a chair. She is working on a laptop and is surrounded by boxes.

The Way You Are Treated

The first thing that you are going to need to look at is the way that you are treated. This is going to tell you a lot about the business that you work for. Of course, if it is just one person on the management team who is not treating people very well, then this could just be a bad apple among the bunch. However, if it is more common than this and it seems to be a theme, then you know that it’s just the way things are at this business.

This is completely wrong, and nobody should be forced to work with a boss that treats them poorly. You may work for the company, but this doesn’t mean you are a slave to that business for the rest of your life. Ensure that you are making notes of these instances, and if you can have someone around to witness them most of the time, this could be helpful to you in the future.

The Hours You Work

You should also be looking at the hours that you are expected to work. This might happen gradually with one lot of forced overtime here and there before it works up to you working more hours than you can manage. This tends to happen towards the release of something big within a company, but it’s still wrong.

For example, a few years ago Rockstar games had this exact issue when they were finishing Red Dead Redemption 2. They were forcing their workers to take overtime, which is illegal. You cannot be forced to take more hours than is allotted in the contract that you signed when you started working for the business.

If you feel as though you are being forced into overtime with the threat of your job, this is another thing to note down with the way you are being treated. How many hours you work should be able to be tracked on the system, so the proof is always there.

The Morale Of The Business

What is the morale of the business like? Do people generally seem to like working for this company, or are they all wanting to get new jobs and escape? The morale of a business is important usually for its success or failure, and you can also tell how well the employees are being looked after through this as well. When employees have low morale, it is more than likely something to do with the fact that they have no motivation, nobody is driving them to succeed, and nobody is telling them that they are doing a good job when they are.

Everyone likes to have a goal, and everyone likes to know that they are doing a good job. If the management in the business that you are working for isn’t encouraging people, motivating them, and rewarding them appropriately, this is going to be a miserable place to work.

The Way Things Work

You should also keep your eye on the way things work in general. Have you noticed that sometimes things happen that look a little bit odd to you? If you have, then you might be curious to know more. You need to be careful here because you don’t want to be caught snooping around for information, but if you happen to hear something, make sure you make a note of it.

If it’s something bad that the company would not want to get out, ensure that they don’t know you know. It may be something that needs to be told, and if this is the case but you don’t know what to do, then you can check out the Whistleblower Info Center where you can get some of the help that you need.

If It’s What You Were Promised

The final thing that we suggest you look out for is whether or not you are getting what you were promised. Is the business everything that you were sold in the job ad and in the interview? If the answer is no and you are not happy where you are now, you should leave. We spend far too much of our lives at work to be miserable from the moment we get up in the morning to the moment we walk through the door at home. You deserve to work for a company that makes you feel appreciated, and anything less shouldn’t be tolerated by you.

You are not obligated to stay with the business if you accepted the contract under false pretenses, and if you feel that this is the case, make sure they know that when you quit. If they want to take you to court for this, be ready with all the information we have told you to look for.

We hope that you have found this article helpful and now see some of the things that you are going to have to watch out for when you start work at a new business. You don’t want to stay somewhere that you are going to be unhappy, but you also need to keep your eye out for the good of everyone else. You should never be forced to stay somewhere that isn’t treating people right, or where you feel uncomfortable. Keep your eye out for these things and you will have everything you need if things do start to go wrong. We wish you the very best of luck.
